Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is the capital of the USA. The city was built in 1791, ten years after the USA gained independence. The new country needed a capital. The city is named after George Washington who was the first President of the USA.

There are a lot of famous monuments and buildings in Washington. Here you can see three :

The first monument is called The Washington Monument. It is a huge obelisk in the centre of the political district of the city. The monument was built in 1884 in honour of George Washington. He was born in 1732. He was the leader of the American Army which defeated the British Army in the War of Independence. Americans call him "The Father of the Nation" because he was the first President of the Independent USA.The monument constructed in his honour is 169 metres high.

2. The second building is the White House. It is the official home of the President of the USA and his family. Today Donald Trump lives in the White House with his wife. Construction of the house started in 1792 and it was finished in 1800. President John Adams was the first President to live in the White House when he was elected in 1800. There are 132 rooms in the White House, including 35 bathrooms.

But the White House is not just a "house". The President also works in the building. He meets leaders from other countries there. The President has got his official office in the White House and he meets his advisors and senators there. The office is called The Oval Office and it is situated on the west wing of the house.

3. The third building is the Capitol Building. The senators of the USA meet here and decide the nation's policies. Construction started in 1793 and it was officially opened in 1800.

The building has got a dome in the middle. You can see a statue on top of the dome. It is called the Statue of Freedom. The building is 88 meters tall, from the steps to the top of the statue.
