Jack The Ripper : The suspects

The police never found "Jack The Ripper". He got his name because of letters which arrived to the press and to the police which were signed "Jack The Ripper'

At the time of the murders, detectives had never before experienced the apparently motiveless brutality of the world's first serial killer. There were many suspects but no one was ever proved guilty... Here are the some of the suspects

	Aaron Kosminski, a Polish Jew, who lived in the Whitechapel district when the murders were committed. He was a hairdresser and a misogynist . The police suspected him but never proved he was the Whitechapel murderer. He entered a lunatic asylum in March 1889.
	Michael Ostrog, a supposed Russian doctor, is another suspect. Why was Ostrog a suspect? He pretended he was a doctor, but he was a well-known criminal, and he had spent time in a lunatic asylum, however, no evidence exists that he was in the Whitechapel area during the time of the murders.
	John Pizer was a jewish shoemaker. He was questioned by the police because he had big knives in his shop and because a leather apron was found next to the body of Annie Chapman. But he didn't know anything about dissection and medical surgery.
	Prince Albert was the most famous suspect. He was Queen Victoria's grandson. He had a reputation for being a 'ladies man'. Rumours said that he was mentally retarded and that he often frequented the prostitutes of Whitechapel. But Prince Albert was in Scotland at the time of two of the murders and he did not possess any medical knowledge. So, how could he be Jack the Ripper?

During the Autumn of Terror hundreds of letters were sent to the police and local press

Here is the transcription of his first letter:

Jack Tthe Ripper : The suspects

Dear Boss,
I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they won't fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track. [...] I am down on whores and I shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it went thick like glue and I cant use it. [....] The next job I do I shall clip the ladys ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn't you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out straight. My knife's so nice and sharp I want to get to work right away if I get a chance. Good Luck.

Many historians believe, however, that this letter was probably not the work of the criminal himself. It is more probable that it was written by a journalist. The crimes of Jack the Ripper were big news at the time and the public followed the story like a television series nowadays. A lot of newspapers were sold during the period of the murders and the sales increased with each new murder and each new theory. So maybe an ambitious newspaper editor told a journalist to write the letter to sell more copies of the newspaper.
